ACETATE
DEFINITION
- known as cellulose acetate, is a plant-based material and an eco-friendly replacement for plastic made from petroleum. Acetate was first created and developed by scientist Paul Schützenberge in 1865.
PROS
- Hypoallergenic material - they're a hypoallergenic material because they come from natural products. In other words, you can wear your acetate glasses comfortably on your face without having any allergic reaction. If you know anyone with sensitive skin, acetate glasses are the way to go for them.
- Flexible - Since acetate glasses can be very flexible when heated, they are more durable than frames made from other materials such as plastic frames. When heat and pressure is applied to the acetate glasses, their cellulose fibers bend easily. Acetate glasses can be heated and easily adjusted to fit any face shape, which delivers superior comfort. Also, if you ever happen to sit on them accidentally, they won't break easily. This means that acetate glasses will be sure to last you longer than plastic glasses.
- Durable - As a plan for the future years, you'll want to invest in high-quality prescription eyeglasses or even reading glasses made of high-quality materials and are durable. Lucky for you, acetate glasses are known for their durability.
CONS
- Higher Cost: As you mentioned, one of the primary drawbacks of acetate material is its cost. Acetate eyeglass frames and other products made from this material are generally more expensive than those made from other plastics like polycarbonate (PC) and TR-90CONS
